They mention that Abby was bitten so when they captured her they probably referred to her chances of survival in the arena by saying "she will last about a month". Like they probably would kill of capable fighters anyway since they pose a threat, and instead of just killing them they have some entertainment.
The whole Abby section works (IMO of course) because Abby is learning to view Lev and Yara as more than just scars at the same time the player is learning to view Abby as more than just "that bitch who killed Joel". If you humanize her too much before she kills Joel you also risk ruining the Ellie half of the story.
